Finding wisdom: Governor's visits to state's smaller towns not such a bad idea

It is a funny thing about governors.

Even if they are from a small town, they get up to Raleigh with all its pomp and circumstance and they forget about the towns that also make this state run.

They become concerned about Charlotte's incentives or Raleigh's traffic, and they are seen everywhere else only when it comes time for elections.

And most often, that is where they make their mistake. They lose touch with the rest of the state and the problems and opportunities that reside in the myriad of other important communities that make up North Carolina.

There is plenty of wisdom in these towns, too -- perspective on what life is really like when you are not buoyed by a capital city or a professional football team.

So to hear that Gov. Pat McCrory just might be interested in really listening -- and perhaps visiting some of these places -- is good news. We will have to see if it is real interest.

But, no matter what, we need to make sure Wayne County is on that list. There are plenty of people here who could tell him a thing or two -- and perhaps help him create a better North Carolina.
