A salute: Col. Jeannie Leavitt and her team have made community proud

There are more than a few months left to sing the praises of 4th Fighter Wing Commander Col. Jeannie Leavitt. She will not officially take her new post until later this year.

But until that time, it is worth saying thank you, not only to the commander who has been such a part of the community here in Wayne County, but also to all the men and women who have worked so hard to help make her tenure a success.

Being the commander of a fighter wing is no easy job -- and it takes a toll on anyone who is privileged enough to accept the title.

Also part of that sacrifice are those families who must share their loved one with thousands of airmen and a community. They deserve special mention, too.

Col. Leavitt will go on to a new assignment, but she can be sure she will have left her mark here, not just because of the accolades she and her airmen have received, but because of the leadership example she sets every day.

Thank goodness we still have time to tell her -- and her airmen -- how much that hard work is appreciated.
