Radio fix: Finger-pointing is missing the mark on radio troubles

The buck often stops with the boss when there is a massive problem like the concerns that continue to swirl around the county's radio system.

But as the county commission prepares to sign yet another contract to fix what has turned out to be a nearly $10 million problem, its members should keep one very important fact in mind.

There are plenty of bucks to pass around for this one.

The purchase of the county's radio system was not a decision made by one person alone. There were many county employees and officials, some still here and some gone, who were instrumental in the research and discussion that ultimately led to the recommendation that the original company be hired and a contract signed.

So as we move forward to get this system performing up to par, it is critically important that the county leadership rely on more than just the usual suspects to not only monitor the work that will now be done to fix the problems, but also when deciding who will be included in making future decisions about such large county purchases.

And the commissioners should be very, very careful that they are getting the correct information as the make another large expenditure -- and prepare for even more.

An ounce of precaution will be worth a pound of cure.
