Holiday bustle: As countdown approaches, caution is a must

The days before a major holiday -- especially Christmas -- are when the thieves come out.

And because most of us are so busy getting ready for the big day at our own homes, and because this season fills us with the desire to help others, we forget to be cautious.

And the crooks know it.

Over the past few weeks, there have been car break-ins, store thefts and home burglaries.

There is no question this is the time to think before leaving a car unlocked, a purse on the front seat or walking out into a parking lot alone.

But there are other crimes this time of year, too -- and they target caring people anxious to share the joy of Christmas with those less fortunate.

There are some people -- albeit not a large number -- who use this season to solicit assistance they do not need and to double dip from those who are offering help.

Before you hand over a donation, make sure you check with some of the local organizations around town. They know who has received help. Or better yet, tell the person soliciting the aid to contact one of those organizations.

That way the money goes to those who need it -- not those who are the best at finding it.
