Fill the kettles: There is still time to help Wayne County's needy families

Their plight is not always in front of you.

The families in Wayne County who are struggling to feed their children, to keep a roof over their heads or who are worried about utility bills do not carry signs -- and some of them could be your neighbors.

The Salvation Army is the last stop for those who are simply without options. Many who turn to this organization do not have backup plans. They do not have relatives close by or family who can help them through a crisis.

And that is why the Salvation Army's Kettle Campaign is so important.

The money raised from this Christmastime collection helps needy families throughout the year. In essence, everyone who puts a dollar or two into the kettle acts as family for those who might have nowhere else to turn.

And the help they provide is often accepted with gratitude and tears from families who thought no one knew or cared.

Many people will be buying lottery tickets today for a very slim chance of winning millions. Why not donate a dollar to a Salvation Army kettle for every ticket you buy today?

You will accomplish two things: first, you will help the Salvation Army reach its goal; and second, it will be a reminder that every chance to help someone is an acknowledgment of the blessings we often take for granted.

There's still time. Let's fill those kettles.
