Helping others: Season is beginning when local need shows itself

Many local organizations have been discussing it for months now -- there is more need in Wayne County this year.

The jump has been attributed to changes in the food stamp offerings as well as a backup that occurred earlier this year, sending hundreds to the local soup kitchen and food pantries.

And the sluggish economy hasn't helped either. There are still plenty of families struggling to make ends meet.

But no matter what the cause, the truth is that this is the time of year when we are asked to dig deep, to share a little bit of our own bounty with others.

And it looks like we will be called on to help again this year.

As you make your plans for your holiday budget, please think about setting a little bit for someone else. There are so many local organizations that could use your help.

Christmas can become much too much about the gifts and not the heart if you are not careful.

This is a chance to honor what it is REALLY about -- or at least should be.
