Heroes tarnished: News about players sad commentary on state of sports

There are many disappointing moments in the world of sports -- and lately, the worst do not involve scores or last-minute offense or defense.

After Olympic athletes losing medals because of banned substances and a famous cyclist admitting he lied about performance enhancing drugs, there is a new group of accused sports cheats who will have to face the music.

An investigation by Major League Baseball has resulted in the naming of at least 20 players -- a few marquee players among them -- who will face questions about their alleged use of illegal substances.

And it is sad to think that once again there might be reason to think that there is yet another sport full of cheaters.

The information is in the early stages of release and the accused are always innocent until proven guilty, but this latest scandal should be an affirmation for those who are wondering if perhaps competition and the race for money and big contracts are just a little out of control.

And as yet another scandal unfolds, one wonders what fathers will say to their sons (and daughters) about sportsmanship and role models.

There just don't seem to be that many left anymore.
