Success is fun: Club's plan not a bad way to push education

Children have celebrated their last day of school for generations.

Usually it is simply the mere fact that they are no longer at a desk. School books are tossed aside as summer activities kick into gear.

But this year, the Optimist Club of Goldsboro has a new idea -- encouraging children to celebrate their accomplishments for the year and to look forward to the challenges they will face next year.

Not bad, huh?

The Kids Fun Day is planned for next Saturday, and will encourage students to enjoy food and fun as they mark their last days of school.

The club's goal is to not only help these young people get ready for a couple months of summer, but also to help them realize that school can be a time of accomplishment and a reason to be proud.

And the effort is a great idea -- especially considering so many children need the reinforcement these days that education is important.

At a time when so much competes for children's attention not just during the summer, but all year long, putting the focus back on learning as a fun activity is setting up the kind of attitudes that result in good grades and graduations.

And that is certainly a win-win.

The club's effort deserves support and is an idea certainly worth expanding in the future.
