Flags waving: This is the day we remember

Freedom has a price.

That is the message that we should remember today as we honor those who have lost their lives while serving their country.

They came from all walks of life and all sorts of communities these heroes. Some of them were Wayne County's native sons and daughters.

And all of them fought for something greater than themselves.

It is important that we fly our flags today.

It is important that we pause as we enjoy our family outings and the first unofficial day of summer to remember why today is a holiday.

But what is even more critical is that we honor what those brave soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines died for -- our nation, and our right to live free.

We owe them -- and their families -- a debt of gratitude we can never really repay.

We can, however, remember their stories and share their message of courage with those we hope will never have to live through the horrors and sacrifices that go along with a world war.

And we can honor their comrades -- those who did come home and continued to protect their country -- and those who still serve it today.

It will be our form of a salute.
