Lottery lunacy: Powerball fever offers interesting glimpse into 'what if'

You can't blame them. In fact, more than a few people reading this right now are probably dreaming about this possibility, too.

"What would I do if I won $550 million?"

And even though we have a better chance of getting struck by lightning, there are more than a few of us willing to plop down the money to take a chance -- just in case.

The Powerball fever has only just begun. With almost another day to buy tickets, who knows what might happen to that final grand total for the winner. If $550 million sounds good, $625 million sounds even better.

And wouldn't it be great if that winning ticket were right here in Wayne County?

The lottery is not a topic without controversy. After all, many of the people spending money on lottery tickets probably shouldn't be doing so. And then there is the whole gambling question.

But the bottom line is that the lottery, like anything, is fine in moderation -- for those for whom gambling is not something that runs askew with their religious values.

It is an amusement and it is a chance to tempt Lady Luck.

The concern we should have is making sure that the funds are making it to the schools as promised and that they are making a difference.

When that money is used properly, it is a nice boost for the schools -- and, in turn, a chance to improve educational opportunities for our children.

So, if you are so inclined, get your ticket and spend some time dreaming.

Because, after all, someone's got to win.
