Pickled green: Festival organizers deserve credit for well-run show

It is not easy being in charge of a community festival.

From the logistics of getting it organized in the first place to making sure things run smoothly the day of, lots of hours went into making the N.C. Pickle Festival a success.

And believe it or not, most of the people who set up the layout, helped vendors with their booths and made sure everything from garbage to security worked properly were volunteers.

The festival is a big deal, with lots of moving parts. And just like it is every year, the 2013 edition offered a chance for families to have a little fun without having to mortgage their house.

Thousands of people wandered the streets visiting the many booths and enjoying everything from music, rides and a children's petting zoo to a ride on a mechanical bull.

It was a family affair -- just exactly as it should have been.

The stars of the day were pickles -- and they were centerstage as usual.

But how nice it was to see so many people work so hard to give their community a day of fun.

They made it look easy -- and deserve our thanks.
