Fresh start: New Year not just time for resolutions, but for new priorities

Hindsight, predictably, is 20/20. So, as most of us contemplate the dawn of a new year, we look back with a critical eye at what could have been done better in the year just passed.

And for most of us, there are plenty of items that fall into that category.

So, out will trot the old stand-bys as proposals for a new, and more productive 2013 -- losing weight, getting healthier, stopping smoking, paying down debt.

But this new year, in addition to those resolutions, we need to add a few more ideas to our lists -- byproducts that have come from what has been a really tough 2012.

This is the time to rethink our priorities, to remember what matters -- and what doesn't.

So here are a couple to ponder as you create your 2013 "possibilities" list:

1. Time is precious, don't waste it. You never know how long you have with someone you love. And no matter how much time might be left, there is not enough to waste any of it fighting, bickering and holding grudges. There is not one person who lost a loved one to tragedy this year who would not give everything for one more moment with the person they lost. You have that moment. Take advantage of it in 2013.

2. There are true heroes in this world. Resolve in 2013 to care as much about those who do little things that make a difference in your community and nation as you do about who won "American Idol" -- and a whole lot more than about when Kayne West and Kim Kardashian's baby is due. We need to celebrate those who give and contribute, not those who simply land in the media spotlight. The former will inspire. The other simply amuses.

3. Life is short. Hug your kids more this year, spend time with your family (in whatever form it takes) and remember to call your parents. In the end, that is what matters, not what kind of car you drive or your bank balance.

And most importantly, be safe, happy and have faith as 2013 dawns.

It is our chance to start again.

Happy New Year.
