Comfort, joy: Holiday brings out our best

It is easy to talk about what Christmas means -- and what it should represent.

Despite what some say, it is a religious holiday designed to honor a significant event of love, faith and hope -- the birth of Jesus Christ.

And from that root comes a season of compassion, caring and remembering what does -- and should -- really matter.

This holiday season has been particularly tough for some Americans. Financial strain has made many people rethink how they will mark the holiday this year.

And the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy as well as the horror and grief of the Connecticut shootings have also made us think about the real meaning behind this wonderful holiday.

Many of us are feeling blessed and lucky this holiday season.

And that is why it is more important than ever that we share and show our true Christmas spirit. And across this county, many, many people have.

They realize that Christmas is not about ribbons, bows or presents. It is not even about lavish holiday feasts and parties that go on into the night.

It is about faith. It is about family. And it is about compassion for one another.

So as you gather tomorrow for your annual holiday festivities, pause for a moment to think about what matters -- and hold them close.

That's what Christmas is really all about.

Merry Christmas to all of you.
