Secret force: Local volunteers add much to this community

There are many of them out there, but you see them only sporadically.

The people in this county who give their time to charitable organizations are numerous -- but publicity is the last thing they seek.

They are volunteering because they care and because there is work that needs to be done.

And their contributions are vital.

It would surprise you to know just how many hours of work are put in by people who receive no compensation for their time, whose paychecks are measured in smiles and thank-yous rather than dollars and cents.

And there is no question that some of these organizations would be lost without the help of these individuals.

Whether it is Meals on Wheels, local animal rescue groups or mentorships for needy children, there are people right now contributing their talents to make their community better.

And more people just like them are needed.

So pick a charity -- any charity -- and share your talents.

You really can make a difference.
