Back to work: Congress is now back in session. Keep an eye peeled.

The arguments are going to be interesting as Congress takes its seats for the opening of the lame duck session.

And all of it would be just another amusing anecdote and more political spin if it were not for one really big problem that still needs to be resolved -- the fiscal cliff.

There is going to have to be some give and take this time -- on both sides. Otherwise, there is going to be a really big surprise for many taxpayers come Jan. 1.

But don't expect the kumbaya of Election Day to continue this week -- it can't.

The president is going to have to acknowledge that there is a serious problem with the economy and that the country wants him to do something other than give inspiring speeches. And the Republicans are going to have to understand that there will have to be some moves made soon.

There needs to be a tough discussion this week -- lame duck or no. And we need to pay close attention to who does -- and says -- what.

The potential consequences are too serious not to.
