Sandy thoughts: When it is not in the news as much, it is easy to forget the need

Not that it is disappearing much, but there is going to be less and less coverage of the devastation along the East Coast as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

There always is -- the rest of the country moves on to the next piece of news.

But even as the story fades from our headlines, we should not forget the people who are still without homes, power and, in some cases, anywhere to turn.

Recovering from a natural disaster of this magnitude takes time. But it is important that we keep our eye on everything from how federal officials handle the response to what the private sector and the rest of the country can do to help.

Hurricane Sandy victims have a long row to hoe -- and their neighborhoods will be fighting back for a long time.

We should make sure we offer our hands and money to those in need as they struggle to get their lives back in order.

After all, this area knows what it means to have to start over after a storm.
