Politics paused: It is right choice to put campaign on hold through storm

There are advantages to being the sitting president -- lately, they involve commandeering TV time almost at will.

But there are responsibilities, too, and this week President Barack Obama has lived up to an important one.

It is the right decision to delay campaign trips as the East Coast prepares for the assault from Hurricane Sandy. The president needs to be in White House, not drumming up votes around the country. It is his duty.

And he should be commended for realizing that.

Hurricane Sandy is an unprecedented storm -- and one that is scaring a lot of people. Knowing that the president is in residence -- and that resources are fully focused on taking care of the people this storm could affect -- is the right choice.

There will be time for more politics after the storm passes. For now, the focus should be on those Americans who must face its wrath.
