Don't forget: There's still a need at local food pantries

It was not that long ago when the Salvation Army let its community know that the organization's food pantry was bare.

And many people likely made a donation that day to help others in the community.

But don't forget -- the need will not go away.

A reality of charitable giving is that there are ebbs and flows when it comes to donations.

People are most active in giving around the holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the times when people open their hearts and their wallets. It is easy to think about sharing your good fortune with others then.

What is more difficult is remembering that the need is there during the rest of the year as well.

So now, when people aren't thinking about food donations, pet food donations to the Humane Society and other charitable giving, is when we should all be supporting these worthy causes.

Now, really, is when they need our help the most.
