Pants pulled up: Dunn City Council has the right idea; too bad others miss point

Every generation has its share of bad clothing decisions. We all have closets full of those remnants of another time and mindset.

But this week, the Dunn City Council decided to consider action against one fashion trend that has implications that extend beyond fashion.

The idea the council came up with is to ban saggy pants -- and to institute a fine against said dress.

Now, of course, the ACLU is already on high alert, claiming that the proposed ban is too vague to be enforceable and unconstitutional to boot.

Dunn's mayor pro-tem, himself a former leader of the North Carolina Black Leadership Caucus, has no problem with the plan, saying there is nothing positive about the baggy pants trend and that to ban it is not racist.

Good for him.

Truth is, a baggy pants ban will not solve any problems with crime, poor school performance or poverty, but it sends a message to young people that they need to have some personal responsibility, too -- to present themselves in a manner that earns them respect.

It is just an added benefit that we won't have to look at their underwear anymore.
