Last call: Closing ceremonies will offer chance to review London 2012

It has been a special Olympics -- and not just because of Michael Phelps either.

There were many stories of triumph and reward for hundreds of athletes who have been working for four years for just a couple minutes of fame on the track, in the pool or in one of the other venues.

Truth is, they make it look easy.

And while some will come home with medals -- even gold ones -- we should be proud of all of those who set a goal and made their dream of competing as an Olympian come true.

As we prepare for the closing ceremonies this weekend, we can look with pride at the moments when competition was set aside for sportsmanship and when extraordinary effort showed us all that sometimes there is something more important than winning.

London 2012 will offer lots of memories, but its most important offering will be what it says about the world we live in.

Perhaps the Olympic spirit does live on.
