They served: City Council members gave time to the city over years

You might not have agreed with everything -- or anything -- that Don Chatman, Jackie Warrick or Bob Waller said or did during their tenures as Goldsboro City Council members.

In fact, you might even have concurred with them that it is time for them to go and for new ideas and people to take over.

But there is something that has to be acknowledged as these three men cast votes for the final time at tonight's council meeting.

At least they served.

So many times, people complain about the state of their community, but they are not willing to become part of the solution.

There are fewer and fewer people who want to take on the responsibility of campaigning and then serving on their cities' governing bodies.

Warrick, Chatman and Waller have been council members for a long time -- at first because they wanted to, but perhaps, later, because few people stepped up to serve.

This community should be grateful that all three men did take the time to be a part of city government. It is not as easy a job as some people think.

So happy retirement, gentlemen, and thanks for caring enough to try to make a difference.
