Fun, good work: Alumni make sure the legacy of a good education carries on

A lot of fun will be had this weekend as members of the Dillard/Goldsboro graduating classes gather in the city to mark their respective reunions.

Old friends will reunite, and plenty of parties will be had.

But underneath all that hoopla lies a tradition -- a commitment to giving back.

The alumni group awards scholarships every year to deserving students -- and its members raise the money to support the effort.

So, this weekend, and the other gatherings held by these classes throughout the year, are more than just social in nature. They are good works, too.

The alumni should be commended for their dedication to making sure many more students have the opportunity to go to college and to build careers.

They understand how important it is to remember where you came from -- and they put their money where their hearts are.

And, in the process, they set a great example for the generations of graduates who will follow.
