Other options: College/high school programs offer chances for success

There are some people who think the only way to succeed is to get a college degree. Others think an academic focus is the only way to turn high school into the possibility of a future. Not so.

Programs like the ones that are currently being run through a joint partnership between Wayne Community College and the county schools offer students with other talents the chance to shine, to find a potential career and to discover they can make their way in the world.

There is a misconception that these programs do not require learning the basics. Far from it. They just put the basics in a light that includes an interest in a vocational or other training opportunity. And that is a blessing for a young person who might be a whiz at mechanical endeavors, but who might struggle a bit in a traditional classroom.

Other programs also offer a non-traditional path for a gifted student who wants to get a head start on college.

And we need more of that.

Vocational and interest-based programs are rigorous these days. They capitalize on skills that are often the basis for long and profitable careers. The alternatives they offer are great ways to keep students engaged and focused on their futures.

And they are a resource we must continue to develop.
