Act still a plus: We need every weapon in the war against terror

There is no question that most of us would like to have seen no more need to continue the increased surveillance powers that the Patriot Act provides.

Most of us likely would have hoped that nearly a decade after Sept. 11, 2001, the concerns about terrorism and dangers to U.S. citizens would have been mitigated, at least.

And while it is true that we are making progress in the war against Islamic extremism, the reality is, there is still a lot more work to do.

And until the day comes when it really is safer and the world is united against those who are threatening to kill and destroy America and its allies, we need every piece of information, any secret and any means we can find to protect this nation and its citizens.

The same is true when it comes to interrogation techniques and any other edge we can get that will give us the connections and the tips we need to stop terror plots in their tracks.

Truth is, we are in danger, still, from radical Muslims. And it is only a matter of time before another self-appointed leader declares war on U.S. citizens.

To protect ourselves, and our country, we need to be on top of information and prepared to act to prevent terror acts before they happen.

The Patriot Act might not be everything we want it to be -- but for right now, it is a necessity.
