Achievers: Program at Wayne Early/Middle College High School deserves note

There are some people who are probably less than excited about hearing President Barack Obama speak anywhere -- let alone Wayne County.

But that is no reason not to support a local high school's efforts to get the president to speak at its upcoming commencement.

First, no matter what you think of his policies, Obama is the president and to have him in this county would be an honor. He is our leader, our commander in chief and a symbol of this great nation.

Secondly, this is a high school that is a manifestation of everything we hope Wayne County Schools will be in the future -- and an example of the progress that has been made here already. Earning attention and recognition for programs that not only offer alternative paths to a high school diploma, but also encourage students to strive for excellence, is something that we should seek.

And finally, the students at WEMCHS have put a lot of time and effort into their video entry and are excited about the prospect of their school getting the attention.

They are counting on their community to support that effort and to turn out in force to vote for them to win the competition.

So let's vote online for them -- to show them that their community supports their efforts and is proud of their achievements.
