A storyteller: Former editor made sure community's stories were told

In today's fast-paced journalism world, sometimes it is the connection to the people that those who write forget.

That is what makes news relevant and stories worth reading.

Those who marvel at the simplest of tales and the achievements of people without famous names or pedigrees -- while still keeping their eye on those who hold the power and are responsible for their community's future -- are among the rare few who understand that being a journalist is, in essence, the people's business.

This weekend, former News-Argus editor Gene Price was named among the ranks of men and women who have truly distinguished themselves in the field as one of the newest inductees into the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame.

He was introduced by a man who has also earned a spot in that august group of men and women -- Pulitzer Prize winner Gene Roberts.

Both men have built distinguished careers but have never forgotten where they came from -- and that should make their community proud.
