Better streets? Infrastructure all over city needs to be maintained, not just downtown

It probably goes without saying, but in light of some of the decisions by state, local and national leaders lately, it is certainly worth a reminder.

Big plans are wonderful -- new buildings, downtown revitalization are all factors in the continued strength of the city of Goldsboro.

But when you are looking at the big picture it is important to remember the little things, too.

Goldsboro officials need to be vigilant about the conditions of city streets and facilities that are important to the people who live here.

That means that Councilman Bob Waller's call for increased vigilance about street repairs is a timely reminder.

There are plenty of places where a nice facelift, a good cleanup and some filled potholes would make for a better view for many city residents -- and that is important, too.

While money has been tight and it is critical to use what we have cost-effectively, it is also vital that we keep in mind that a city without the necessary infrastructure cannot send the message of prosperity and forward thinking that attracts investment.

Those plans should be as important a part of the city's roadmap as the much larger projects.
