Between the lines: If there is one thing politicians are good at, it's redirection

You really have to pay attention when politicians speak -- especially if they are clinging to their political life like many of the candidates running this election cycle.

That is why it should not surprise you at all that there are already mudslinging ads and candidates running their mouths about their opponents with only half an ounce of truth included.

It is simply the name of the game during election season.

But our job as voters this November is to make sure we see through all the spin, mud and name-calling. We have to listen for substance, not get sidetracked by slime. Charisma and being well-spoken should also not distract.

And the same is true for those who are endorsing in races this season. Before you fall head over heels for a candidate based on another person's recommendation, make sure you are really aware of what the person you will be electing stands for.

So as the debates and ads fill the airwaves and newspaper pages, be wary, be cautious, be skeptical. Remember that half of what almost every politician says is nothing but scripted prattle.

And don't be afraid to question. If something doesn't sound right to you, demand more of an explanation or clarification of the position.

You do not want to find out on Nov. 3 that the person for whom you cast your vote is not even close to an ally on issues you believe in.
