Fingers crossed: Rain is nice, but fair volunteers hope it will stay away -- at least for a few days

The fact that Wayne County is getting rain is good news for the community.

The fact that, after weeks of drought, the rain has picked the kickoff of the 2010 Wayne County fair for its return, is a little disconcerting.

A lot of work has gone into the 2010 event, with many people devoting hundreds of hours to making sure this county has a fair to be proud of. And while many of those who are part of the fair faithful are farmers themselves and understand the need for rain, that doesn't make watching weather hamper the fair debut any easier.

But since there is nothing that can be done about the forecast, perhaps the community could help out a bit once the storms have passed on by.

Come on out to the fair as soon as the weather clears -- take a spin on one of the rides, show your grandchild what a real pig looks like and cheer on a 4-Her or two in one of the livestock shows.

And when you have had your fill of farm displays and carnival rides, grab yourself a diet-busting funnel cake -- after all that walking, you will deserve it.

The fair is a fun, family-oriented evening that does not cost nearly as much as most evenings out. Putting it on your family's schedule is a chance to take a little time away from the rat race without having to break the bank.

Wayne County has such a tremendous fair because the community and the numerous volunteers and the Livestock Association work so hard to make it so.

It is definitely a tradition worth continuing.

So put on your jeans and come on out and enjoy a little down-home fun -- even if it rains.
