A nice kickoff: United Way's effort reminds community that we are all in this together

It was a rather unconventional kickoff (thank goodness it only involved capes), but the fun that kicked off the 2010-11 United Way campaign had a deeper message -- especially at a time when so many are so worried about their futures and so many Wayne County families are struggling.

"Together We Can Be Super" is a nice rallying cry -- a phrase that reminds us all that sometimes the best way to move forward to make our community better is by joining hands.

The call was also realistic, acknowledging that not everyone can give hundreds of dollars, but that most of us can spare something to help those who need us, especially now.

There will still be challenges ahead -- many businesses are facing concerns of their own and money just is not flowing like it once was.

But Thursday's beginning is a chance to think differently not only about the United Way, but also about the community agencies that partner with it to change the futures of Wayne County residents.

They need us, more than ever, as do the thousands of Wayne County families who benefit from the services they help fund or provide.

So, perhaps, even though many of us might be a little scared, we can put on capes this year and try to share a little of our good fortune with others.

After all, aren't we that much stronger, really, when we work together?
