A real hero: Can't eat chicken? Then stop by and donate to help officer.

There is nothing easy about having leukemia -- especially at age 25.

But what is even harder is to not only keep your own spirits up, but to encourage everyone around you to do the same.

And that is why so many people are so moved and so awed by the story of Goldsboro police officer James Serlick.

Struck at a very young age with a disease that is aggressive and tough to beat, he has been a source of sunshine and faith throughout his battle -- admonishing his family and friends not to "sit around and cry" at the annual Relay for Life event, but to celebrate and to be happy and positive.

Now that is a real hero.

Add to that the fact that this young man dedicated his life's work to keeping this community safe, and there is ample reason to stop by the benefit planned for him and his family this week.

The chicken dinners might be sold out, but there is still plenty of room for donations -- all of which will be used to help James and his family deal with the incredible expense that comes along with a cancer battle.

This community has always had a soft spot for a man in uniform. Here is one who has more than earned the admiration, respect and support of his city and county.

So stop on by St. Paul United Methodist Church Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and join in the fun -- and then go home and hug your own family.

It is what James Serlick would want you to do.
