Volunteer power: School district, Red Cross supporters are examples to emulate

Who says one person can't make a difference?

This week, the Wayne County chapter of the American Red Cross honored the volunteers they say have helped the organization continue to do its job -- even in what can be said, at best, is a challenging economy.

They also recognized school children who contributed to helping others a penny at a time.

On the same day, the Wayne County School District paused to honor volunteers who dedicate their time and resources to making sure the county's children have the best education possible. Among those honorees was the top award winner, who did not let retirement stop her from helping the families of Spanish-speaking students.

There are hundreds of stories just like these in Wayne County -- local residents who give of themselves and their time to make their communities better. We often do not hear their names, and they prefer it that way, but there is no question that this community is a better place because of them.

So what is the lesson to be learned here?

We talk a lot about giving back -- and most of us find plenty of reasons why we cannot find the time to give, or we procrastinate about offering our services.

If everyone were to join in the effort to improve life in Wayne County and to help those who need us, can you imagine what this community could accomplish?

Those who were honored this week deserve our thanks -- after all, they are the ones doing the work.

Our best tribute to them would be to join them in their quest.
