Speak up: Despite what others say ... your voice really does matter.

There is power in numbers.

So, if you feel a certain way about a certain topic -- whether it be the new recreation center project or the need to support a particular local group or cause -- you need to tell someone besides your neighbor. You need to let your leaders know you care and are willing to stand up for what you believe in.

Over the last few months, Americans have started speaking out again -- about everything from local politics to national decisions. And they have not let anyone stop them from having their say -- not even those who mischaracterize their efforts.

This is America -- a country founded on the principles of freedom and justice. We are all free to say what we think and to advocate for candidates or causes we care about. That freedom was guaranteed to us many, many years ago by a band of patriots who died to create this nation, and is reinforced every day by the military men and women who serve to keep this nation free.

But even though we are guaranteed the right to speak, not everyone does.

The way to effect change in this country is to make yourself the squeaky wheel. And if there are enough squeaky wheels, politicians and others pay attention.

So, if there is something stuck in your craw, or you have an opinion you would like to share, get out your pen or make a telephone call.

This is our country, our state, our county and our city -- but it is up to us to make sure others remember that fact and act accordingly.
