Behind the scenes: There are many county, city and state workers who were unsung heroes

While most people stayed home this weekend snug and safe in their houses, there were plenty of city, state and county employees who had no choice but to put on their boots and to brave the weather.

And they did so, gladly.

The reason so many roads were plowed and that the emergency services did not stop in Wayne County this weekend was that those associated with those efforts did not think of themselves first.

They knew they had a job to do -- and they did it.

And there were other examples of selflessness, too.

The fact that so many employees of Wayne Memorial Hospital cared enough about their patients that they stayed overnight at the hospital to make sure they would be at work is also a sign that there were a lot of people who put their community first.

Make no mistake, the conditions this weekend, especially Saturday night, were hazardous -- and the men and women who patrolled the streets and ran those plows did so with a bit of risk involved.

So while some of us might complain that it is still pretty tough to get around, we should also take the time to thank those who did the best they could to make sure Wayne County stayed safe and was ready to open for business again this morning.

The sun will need another couple of days before it can take care of all the icy spots and before life can return to normal, but in the meantime, it is nice to know that should the city and county face another emergency like this, there is nothing to worry about.

Those who put on their boots this weekend made sure of that.
