In the spirit ... Community's efforts are what holiday is really all about

There have been a thousand examples of it over the past few weeks -- and many more stories of people who have made generosity and caring for one another a part of their Christmas season that we will probably never even know about.

Wayne County has done itself proud this holiday season -- as usual.

The best part about being a member of this community is that it is grounded in the principles that really matter -- faith, compassion and honor.

As often as we argue in this country about faith and government, and the silliness that revolves around the words "Merry Christmas," it is amazing how when push comes to shove, most Americans understand that Christmas is about opening their hearts to neighbors and strangers. They understand that it all began with one very special gift on one very special night thousands of years ago.

And that is why this holiday, above all others, brings us together under the blanket of peace and love every year.

The staff of The News-Argus and our families want you to know how much we love being this community's newspaper and how often you overwhelm us with your examples of selflessness and caring. You are always there when we ask you to help someone in need -- and we appreciate the support you give.

There are many places that might be larger in population, but they do not even come close to having as much heart as Wayne County.

So, Merry Christmas to you and yours -- and a happy and healthy new year.
