Sam's mission: Young man asks his town to share in his Christmas gift

There needs to be an avalanche of food delivered to a location near Brooklyn Pizzeria, near Walmart, beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Why? Because Sam Thacker has asked his community to help out those in need -- as his present back to those who took the time to help his family through a difficult Christmas.

This will be no day for "I don't have time" or "My budget is spent." This will be a day for anyone who is out and about this holiday season to make a pit stop at a young man's collection site.

And if a few churches or businesses wanted to take up the cause and activate a phone tree or two, that would not be so bad either.

Wednesday will be a special day in Wayne County.

This will be a day to reinforce a young man's vision that no matter how little you have, you can always find a way to share with someone else.

It will be a chance to remind ourselves that Christmas is not about boxes underneath a tree, but the simple gifts we give to one another simply because we are a community.

Sam's food drive is a thank you to a community who made sure his struggling family had a Christmas through a YMCA program this year.

Now, he wants to donate his time to bring in food that he can donate to others who are also having a tough time.

And there should not be anyone in Goldsboro or the surrounding area who cannot find a way to bring at least one can to help him out at his collection point outside Brooklyn Pizzeria.

This is our chance to make an impression on a young man whose simple act of compassion in the face of his own tough time should have definitely made an impression on us.
