Happy Birthday: Marine Corps marks 233 years of keeping nation free

They are too tough to show it, but there are thousands of active duty and retired Marines today who will be walking around with their chests puffed out -- just a bit.

After all, this is their branch of service's 233rd year of keeping this country safe and guarding freedom here and abroad.

And they are taking the time to celebrate.

Many people simply don't realize just how many generations of men and women have been part of the armed forces -- and how long these volunteers have protected this nation and supported its allies.

They don't think at all about where they would be without the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

Well, today is a chance to thank one of the branches of service that does a great deal of the heavy work -- and for whom honor, courage and service are more than just watchwords.

There are countless tales of Marines past and present who have given new meaning to the word courage.

So, today, on their 233rd birthday, take the time to remember -- and to honor the work Marines and other service members do for this country. It is the least we can do.

Semper Fi.
