A challenge: Mount Olive awards showcase potential for the future

At so young an age, their accomplishments were many, the men and women honored Thursday night at the Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce and Mount Olive Jaycees annual recognition banquet.

From a young farmer and a young educator, to a 17-year-old high school student, they have yet to complete the possibilities of their lives.

And their accomplishments were mixed with those who have been at it a little longer — whose service has spanned decades.

So how should a Mount Olive resident feel about his or her community’s future after hearing about the work of his or her neighbors? Proud.

Those honored have already shown that making a difference only takes a moment — a commitment to do just a little more than is required.

And as Distinguished Service Award honoree Kenny Talton told the crowd after humbly claiming his award, the personal rewards are endless when you give to others.

There was also a challenge issued Thursday night — to all those in the audience who have the potential to be future leaders: Get involved.

In the past, Mount Olive’s fortune has been in the capable hands of its citizens — and now, its future will be, too.

Thursday’s festivities proved there is reason to be hopeful about what that leadership and commitment can create.

There is still room in this community for good works and the contributions of its citizens. Wouldn’t it be a blessing to see even more competition for next year’s slate of honors?

This year’s honorees certainly set an example for what is possible if you work hard and believe.

They deserve their community’s thanks.
