Filing to serve: 68 hopefuls add their names to municipal elections list

The filing period is closed, and the names are in.

Now, all that is left is for residents across Wayne County to decide is whom they want to see leading their governments in the next couple of years.

More than 60 people tossed their hats in the ring over the last couple of weeks — all offering their services to their communities as elected officials in a variety of posts.

In some areas, there were multiple candidates, while in others, there were only a few.

Some have a legitimate reason for filing. They have experience or other qualities that would make them good public servants. And most of those have real ideas about how they would lead — if they were chosen for the posts they seek.

Others are more questionable. Some might not even really know what is involved in taking on the position they seek. They just want to serve.

As the weeks go on, and the election nears, it will be increasingly important to know whose name has a legitimate place on the ballot and who really can offer residents knowledge and experience that will allow their communities to grow and prosper.

That is going to be a critical choice — and a somewhat difficult task in many races this fall.

But in the meantime, those who took the time to sign up deserve thanks for caring enough to offer to serve.

It should be an interesting campaign.
