One more vote: WCC Board of Trustees made a pick for continued progress

It is not official yet, not until the state’s board governing community colleges makes the choice a lock, but the Wayne Community College Board of Trustees took a positive step for the college Tuesday.

The board decided to offer the job of president to Dr. Kay Albertson, making her the college’s first woman president, if the state gives its OK to the choice.

Dr. Albertson will have some big shoes to fill. Dr. Ed Wilson, who will retire this summer, has done much to make Wayne Community College one of the top institutions of its type in the state.

And for many of those years of achievement, one of the colleagues by his side has been Dr. Albertson.

Never much willing to take credit for all she has done for the college, Dr. Albertson would be one of the first to point to the hard work of others as the reason for the college’s success, as well as the leadership of the man she has called her mentor.

But thank goodness that modesty did not get in the way when it came time to pick WCC’s next president.

There could have been no better choice.

Dr. Albertson will have ideas of her own and will add her own stamp to Wayne Community College. And she will also carry on many of the first-class projects that were accomplished by her predecessor.

She will be a leader in his image, but with a style and a flair all her own. It will be fun to see where she takes this community’s college next.

The WCC board said Dr. Albertson had one of the steepest hurdles to overcome in her application for the president’s job. She was looked at with extra scrutiny — just to make sure the nomination process was fair to all and ended in a choice that was best for the college.

And, of course, she came through with flying colors — as many of those who are already familiar with her achievements knew she would.

She has only one more hurdle until her nomination is complete — and that is the final approval from the state Board of Community Colleges.

They would be crazy to do anything but give the last nod to the pick.

Dr. Albertson’s appointment is a chance for Wayne Community College to keep its momentum and for Dr. Wilson to know he has left the college in very capable hands. Now, he can relax and get about the business of celebrating his retirement — and the community can be confident that its college has a quality leader ready in the wings.
