A humble man: Dr. William Plummer has served, quietly, for years

It should come as no surprise to anyone who knows Dr. William Plummer of Wayne County that he did not think he deserved his spot in the North Carolina Pork Council’s Hall of Fame for his contributions to the industry.

A simple and humble man, Dr. Plummer said the service he has given not only to those he has worked with, but to his community, was his duty. He saw it as nothing special — or worth mentioning.

Yet, among those who gathered this week in Greenville were many, many friends, colleagues and young professionals who got their starts because Dr. Plummer decided to take them under his wing.

And that is the most valuable sort of generosity — the kind where you give the gift of your expertise and advice without thinking of yourself.

Dr. Plummer stood tall during the presentation of his award, surprised and humbled, of course.

But in true Dr. Plummer fashion, he took the time to advise others to follow the path he has chosen — to help others all they can.

There will be many contributions to his profession that Dr. Plummer will be remembered for — especially as it relates to hog production and veterinary medicine.

But the distinguishing factor that makes him a perfect candidate for the NCPC Hall of Fame is that he is a generous man who thinks of his community and his neighbors, friends, family — and strangers, first.

That is the kind of man whose life is an example to follow. Wayne County should be proud to call him one of its own.
