Season of giving: This community has put a priority on caring this year

If you want to feel good about Wayne County — and focus a bit more on the true spirit of Christmas — just open up the Spirit of the Season section in today’s newspaper.

Inside, you will find dozens of accounts of projects big and small that were done to help others this holiday season. Reading them will make you feel pretty good about where you live.

On this day before Christmas, most of us will still be rushing around trying to get our holiday preparations completed. We will be concentrating on presents, dinner preparations and ribbons and wrapping paper. And, we just might lose a little perspective on just what we are supposed to be celebrating this weekend.

The projects in the Spirit of the Season are not all huge — one is a group of students who raised $72, just because they wanted to make sure needy children had a Christmas. Others are much grander in scope, but no less meaningful. All will touch your heart.

And that is what Christmas should be about — taking time to care for one another. The presents and the merry-making, while fun and a worthwhile tradition, are not what put the heart in this season of giving.

It is the giving.

So as you prepare to enjoy the holidays with your friends and family, take the time to think about what matters most. And if you need a reminder, take a look at the good you and your neighbors have done this holiday season — and beyond.

Of all that has been accomplished in 2006, the fact that we took care of one another is the achievement of which we should be most proud.
