Water is an issue: Stoney Creek Park is a great idea, but flooding does matter

It is hard to speak out against an idea that sounds as good as Stoney Creek Park.

A nice, new, calm and beautiful place for families to gather and for the community to focus some positive attention — who could possibly come up with a reason not to jump on the bandwagon to get the work started?

And there is not a reason to stop pushing for the project, yet. But perhaps there is a need for a second look now, before the planning gets too far along.

This past week’s rain — and the resulting flooding issues again in the park area — suggest that there is a recurring water concern that needs to be addressed.

A new park is a great idea, but if fixtures such as playground equipment and park benches are at risk of being damaged by backed-up water, a plan needs to be put in place to handle the potential problem.

And that should be made clear to taxpayers and potential donors as soon as possible.

Stoney Creek Park is a great idea for this community. It would be yet another positive as Goldsboro and Wayne County continue to try to encourage residential and business development.

By addressing the water issues with a well-researched and clear explanation of the steps to be taken to protect the community’s investment, there might be more willingness to get behind the project and see it to its completion.
