Caring for others: Volunteer Wayne and United Way offer chance to help

There is still time to be a part of a project that could make a difference in Wayne County.

Volunteer Wayne and United Way of Wayne County are currently organizing a week of events to not only honor those who serve their community, but to encourage others to join them in that service.

Days of Caring will be held Sept. 8-16 and will include a variety of projects around the community conducted by volunteers from civic groups, businesses, churches and other organizations.

From landscaping and painting to collections of food, clothing and donations to help the needy, the projects registered so far are designed to make Wayne County a better place to live for people from all walks of life.

And you do not have to be part of a large group to take part, either.

Families and individuals of all ages can also come up with ideas of their own to contribute to the week. And the projects do not have to be large either to make your family part of the effort. Gather up your children for an afternoon visit with residents at a local nursing home, or offer to mow a sick neighbor’s grass, and you can be a part of Days of Caring.

For those who are doing larger projects, Days of Caring organizers ask that they register — to keep a record and just in case someone else wants to join them.

And there is already a rather extensive list for those who would like to take part.

The day is not just about doing projects, either.

Days of Caring is a part of the 2006 campaign kick off for the United Way. It is a chance for community members to not only help their neighbors, but to remember that there are many, many organizations around the county that serve people all year long. These organizations are among the efforts that are supported through the United Way.

It will be a chance to see where your money will be going as well as to remind yourself that there are many ways you can help make a difference in your community and perhaps change someone’s life.

But there more than just service involved in Days of Caring. This is a chance to get to know a few more of your neighbors and to join them in the effort to improve the community we all share.

So, put on your jeans and T-shirt and join the fun. You will surprised how much we can accomplish.
