Speed concerns: Hurry-up society makes for danger on the highways

Checkpoints are annoying, especially when you are in a hurry. And let’s not forget the increased patrols that seem to be omnipresent during every holiday that comes down the road. They also have a chilling effect on some travel, too.

So, why are those stops necessary? And why should law enforcement officials be so vigilant on the nation’s highways?

The answer can be found in the totals announced after the holiday travel period is over.

We are in too much of a hurry these days — especially when we are determined to reach a destination for a vacation or other time with family. Sometimes that means taking risks we shouldn’t take just to get there quicker.

Increased speed, inattention as well as impaired drivers behind the wheel are all reasons increased patrols are necessary and why they save lives.

This Fourth of July holiday, there will be thousands of people across the nation who will lose their lives unnecessarily on the country’s highways.

Taking a few extra minutes to prepare for the trip, slowing down on the highway and reporting problem drivers are good ways to keep your family safe.

The result will be worth the time you lose.
