Community has much for which to give thanks

Being thankful doesn’t take a lot of work, especially if you open your eyes and look around you.

In Wayne County, there are a multitude of reasons to be thankful today — and every day.

This is a good community with many people who care about one another. While this county has its issues, just as any community does, there is a spirit and a hometown feel here that suggest this is a place that will continue to thrive while others are struggling.

Wayne County residents have proven time and again that they care about their neighbors as well as other families in other states who might be having a tough year. Compassion and a commitment to caring are what keep a community going through the tough times and what will make sure there is a future full of good news. That is a pretty significant reason to be thankful.

We have one of the best air force bases in the world, and are lucky to be able to call the men and women who serve at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base our neighbors.

The base survived the recent Base Realignment and Closure Commission hearings without a scratch, and there is reason to be positive about what is ahead for those who serve there and the community that proudly serves as their adopted hometown.

We will have our issues. That is part of being a community that is growing and changing.

We will have our disagreements, too.

But in the end, it is who we are and how we work together that will matter.
And the fact that most of this community already knows that is reason in itself to be thankful now and optimistic as 2005 gives way to a brand new year.

Happy Thanksgiving.
