At O’Berry: Jerry Lyall set a high standard

Dr. Jerry H. Lyall is retiring from O’Berry Center at Goldsboro at the end of this month. He has served as the center’s director since 1978. Succeeding him will be Dr. Frank S. Farrell, who has had the privilege of working with Dr. Lyall for almost three decades.

Under Dr. Lyall’s leadership, O’Berry Center is widely recognized among mental care professionals as being among the best residential facilities in the United States.

Appreciation of that is echoed by relatives of the patients cared for at the institution.

Individuals plagued with developmental disabilities probably have had no greater advocate or more innovative leader than Jerry Lyall.

It is not uncommon for institutions caring for mental disabilities to come under criticism, often from emotionally stressed relatives.

It is perhaps most significant that never during Jerry Lyall’s watch has O’Berry Center or its professional staff been regarded with anything but respect and admiration.

Dr. Frank Farrell put it succinctly and reassuringly in a recent letter to family members and friends of O’Berry constituents: “O’Berry Center has an incredibly talented group of staff who are committed to the individuals we serve. Working together, we will continue to strive to provide the best services possible for your loved one.”

Dr. Jerry Lyall established a level of dedicated service and public trust that have earned the highest appreciation of O’Berry Center and all who serve its residents and the citizens of North Carolina.
