An opportunity: Everyone can participate in Saturday’s Litter Sweep

Many of our fellow citizens and private businesses will be involved in next weekend’s Litter Sweep. And, in fact, all of us can have a part. It’s sponsored by Keep Wayne County Beautiful, the city of Goldsboro, Wayne County and the N.C. Department of Transportation. Doing its part will be Wilber’s Barbecue, which will be cooking a pig and a half to be served at Herman Park for those participating in the effort. Coca-Cola will be providing drinks, and Ryan’s will donate punch bowl cake. Sponsors are urging civic groups, churches, businesses and private individuals to take part. A clever Easter egg hunt-type incentive is being provided this year. Among litter that might be picked up will be some plastic bottles with coupons attached. The coupons can be redeemed for $10 or $20 bills during the barbecue lunch. The opportunity to Keep Wayne County Beautiful extends to all of us, and not just on next Saturday. We can do our part by not littering and by being on constant lookout to report anyone who does. Our city and county officials all have shown increased concern over the problem and have voiced a determination to crack down on violators. The Litter Sweep is a good time for all citizens to dedicate ourselves to not only ridding our county of unsightly litter but to change the poor reputation we have for the appearance of many of our roadsides.
