LIONEL GORDON TAYLOR
Jan. 13, 1939-July 24, 2018
Lionel Gordon “Jack” Taylor, 79, completed his journey home Tuesday, July 24, 2018, to the welcoming words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
Jack was born Jan. 13, 1939, in Wayne County to the late Lorenza H. Taylor and Mattie Lee Taylor.
He had a 30-year career in fire service as a firefighter, engineer and driver with the City of Goldsboro Fire Department. Jack retired from Goldsoboro Fire Department in 1991, and continued to operate Jack’s Body Shop, the family business he started in 1977. Along with his son, Jack continued to work in the family business until his health would not allow him to do so, but was always available to give helpful advice on how to get the job done.
Jack was a member of United in Christ Church in Goldsboro. He was devoted to the churches he was a member of, served as a deacon and was involved in many activities where he shared the love of God.
Jack was a hard-working man, which was the theme of his life; he lived to work, but occasionally you could find him fishing or picking up golf balls, as he would always do from early in life.
He was the kind of man who was loyal to his family, who took great pride in caring and providing for them.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 27, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at United in Christ Church, followed by a service to celebrate Jack’s life at 2 p.m., with his pastor, the Rev. Ira Williford, and the Rev. Ray Smeltzer officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Jack is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Mary Taylor; daughter, Lynette Bryan and husband, Steve; son, Kent Taylor and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Susan Reed and husband, Damion and Eddie Taylor; and great-grandchildren, Adalynn and Mason.
He is also survived by his sister, Myde Faircloth, and brother, Craig Taylor.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Taylor.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to United in Christ Church, 1314 Patetown Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seymourfuneralhome.com.
