MARGARET YELVERTON HAMM BATTEN

Dec. 22, 1919- July 6, 2018

Margaret Yelverton Hamm Batten, Goldsboro, completed her journey home, at the age of 98, on Friday, July 6, 2018, to the welcoming words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Margaret was born in Wayne County on December 22, 1919 to the late William Lloyd Yelverton and Carrie West Yelverton.

She had attended Eureka High School.

Margaret was a member of Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a true Christian lady who loved God and lived each day showing those around her what faith in action is all about. She was caring, giving, loving, and yes  in charge!

Most importantly, Margaret loved her Savior, the Lord Jesus, with all her heart, and she loved God’s Word. She was constantly memorizing Bible verses and praying those verses over those she loved and countless others. Though she was a humble, gentle woman, Margaret was nonetheless a powerful prayer warrior, and only heaven knows what a wonderful and eternal impact all her many years of faithful praying have had on her family, her friends, and the world at large. “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16)

A funeral service to celebrate Margaret’s life and to give witness to her faith in Jesus Christ will be Sunday, July 8, 2018 at 5 p.m.  at the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with her pastor, the Rev. Berry House officiating.

The family will greet friends Sunday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of Annette and Gerald Gurley.

A private interment for the family will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the West Family Cemetery in Faro, with the Rev. Eddie McKeel officiating.

Margaret is survived by her son, Richard Hamm of Goldsboro; daughters, Annette Gurley and husband, Gerald of LaGrange and Debbie Witherington and husband, Linwood of Goldsboro; five grandchildren, Michael Gurley (Beth), Leslee Lane, Michelle Newby, Mitzi Witherington and Hollie Strohkorb (Ron); and eight great-grandchildren, Travis Gurley (Talbot), Miranda Gurley, Madison Newby, Ashlie Scott Newby, Cameron Newby, Payton Lane, Hannah Strohkorb and Emily Strohkorb. She is also survived by the mother of Richard’s children, Lee Hamm of Goldsboro; special niece, Brenda Witherington of Goldsboro; stepchildren, Morris Batten and wife, Margie of Oxford, Roy Batten and wife, Cathy of Goldsboro, Edna Whaley and husband, Ken of Goldsboro, Myrtle Mumford and husband, Francis of Lucama, and Mary Pate and husband, Junior of Pikeville; step-daughter-in-law, Larue Batten of Virginia; sister-in-law, Clara Yelverton of Princeton and Ruth Hamm Cherry of Goldsboro; and many other extended family she loved very much.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Leamon Hamm and Rev. W.G. Batten; brothers, Robert “Bob” Yelverton, Lloyd Yelverton, Jr. and Ray Yelverton; and sisters, Edna Heath and Sarah Sauls.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be given in Margaret’s memory to Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church, 204 Country Day Road, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
